Cybersecurity Is a Relationship Issue: Why Trust, Transparency, and Collaboration Matter More Than Ever in Freight

Rolondo ThomasJanuary 23, 2026

Cybersecurity in freight is a relationship issue. When brokers and carriers work together openly and collaboratively, they strengthen the entire supply chain's security.

The freight industry is built on trust. Today, that trust is under constant pressure from cybercrime — one of the fastest-growing threats to the industry. Cybersecurity in freight is no longer a back-office IT concern. It is a business risk, a relationship risk, and increasingly, a shared community problem. The Changing Nature of Risk in Freight Bad actors no longer need to steal a truck to steal a load. They target digital access points. The result is a surge in incidents including load hijacking and double brokering, payment diversion and wire fraud, identity theft involving carriers and brokers, and ransomware disruptions. In nearly every case, the initial point of failure is trust without verification. Cybersecurity Starts with Relationships, Not Software Most cyber incidents begin with phishing emails, spoofed domains, compromised logins, or bad actors posing as legitimate partners. These attacks succeed because freight moves quickly and relies on trust-based workflows. When brokers and carriers know each other as people rather than just entries in a TMS, unusual behavior is noticed sooner. Questions are asked. Assumptions are challenged. Verification becomes routine. Cybersecurity as a Shared Responsibility One of the most damaging assumptions is that cybersecurity belongs to IT teams or to the other party. Attackers rely on these assumptions to move laterally across organizations. When brokers and carriers come together, they can establish shared expectations around how identities are verified, how payment changes are confirmed, how suspicious activity is escalated, and how incidents are addressed without blame. Security is the result of trust done right.
